Unilever Ventures invest in P2i Ltd

11th April 2008

Unilever Ventures has completed an investment in P2i Ltd, the provider of the super liquid-repellent treatment known as ion-mask™.

ion-mask™ works by applying a protective layer, just nanometres thick, over the entire surface of a product by means of an ionised gas or “plasma”. This layer is molecularly bound to the surface and will not leach away. This transforms the surface of the product to display ultra low surface energy values down to one third that of PTFE (Teflon) and leading brands of water repellent treatments, displaying highly water shedding properties while leaving the other properties of the product unchanged. Invisible to the naked eye, ion-mask™ allows materials to truly breathe but stops water ingress, bouncing off the surface instead like beads of mercury.

The funding from Unilever Ventures will be used to accelerate the commercialisation of ion-mask™ across numerous market sectors. Mark Muth, a Director at Unilever Ventures commented: “True technical innovation is a rarity these days but having tracked P2i’s progress over the past several months we spotted something pretty revolutionary in ion-mask™. Having assessed the technology for both performance textiles and technical market segments, there’s no doubt this is a world class process and we are looking forward to working with P2i to accelerate its commercial roll-out into some exciting new sectors.”

Unilever Ventures join existing investors Porton Capital, Ploughshare Innovations and the Rainbow Seed Fund.
