mimoOn first to implement 3GPP LTE protocol stack on next generation packet processor

Duisburg, 14 May 2008: mimoOn GmbH, a leader in software defined radio solutions for advanced wireless standards, today announced the implementation of the entire LTE protocol stack on Wintegra’s WinPath2 access processor.

The solution is optimized for low memory footprint, as well as for processing power and power consumption. The MAC, RLC, PDCP, and RRC components will all be fully featured, based on the Release 8 36.3XX series baseline specifications from 3GPP. In addition, mimoOn’s solution is entirely software defined, so it is easy to modify or customize even after being deployed – an important feature as the standards for the protocol layers will continue to be revised well into 2009. The implementation incorporates innovations such as advanced scheduler algorithms that optimize in time and frequency to enable higher throughput and capacity based on traffic loads, channel impairments, and QoS targets.

This protocol stack, along with mimoOn’s previously announced LTE PHY solution, will be pre-certified through the company’s Test and Certification partners.
The WinPath2 platform provides high performance by utilizing multi-processing multi-threading data path engines, along with high-speed memory interfaces. It also includes hardware accelerators for integrated security, hierarchical shaping, deep packet classification, intrusion detection, and content searching – all with low power consumption and system cost. The control path is provided by an integrated MIPS 24K processor. The data path processing comprises a multi-core engine with large program memory, which provides enhanced processing power along with scalability and the flexibility to upgrade as protocols and standards evolve.

“LTE will enable the next generation of wireless networks to achieve 100Mbps downlink/50Mbps uplink capability, and has been a major theme at recent shows,” commented Thomas Kaiser, CEO of mimoOn. ”With this integrated high performance solution, mimoOn now offers the entire reference chain of LTE PHY and protocol stack software, enabling one-stop shopping for manufacturers who need to meet time-to-market windows in 2009.”

mimoOn will demonstrate its LTE SDR solutions at the LTE World Summit show in Berlin from May 21st to 23rd, and the NGMN Industry Conference in Frankfurt from June 25th to 27th.
