T-VIPS JPEG2000 kept Scandinavian broadcasters on the ball at Euro 2008

T-VIPS AS, a global leader in professional video management and distribution, with advanced solutions for the contribution & distribution of broadcast quality video signals, today announced that its award-winning and first to market JPEG2000-based solutions were chosen by Telenor for the contribution and primary distribution of Euro 2008 soccer championship SD and HD video for TV 2 Norway, TV 2 Denmark and TV4 Sweden. As the final whistle blew on Sunday 29th June, Telenor Satellite Broadcasting's successful coverage of the world's third largest sporting event concluded with Nordic viewers enjoying video quality that was as colourful and vibrant as Spain's attacking football.

T-VIPS' JPEG2000-based solutions, the TVG415 and TVG430 Video Gateways, compressed and encoded the HD and SD video streams in Vienna prior to being transmitted over fibre to the TV 2 Norway playout centre in Bergen, TV 2 Denmark playout in Odense and the TV4 playout in Stockholm. At these playout centres, the JPEG2000 video streams were decoded by TVG415/430s prior to being produced and adapted for end-user distribution. Telenor Satellite Broadcasting selected T-VIPS' JPEG2000-based solution for the European Championships following the successful use of T-VIPS JPEG2000-based equipment for the transport of HD UK Premier League football from London to Sweden.

'JPEG2000 is now a mature technology which enables broadcasters to transport HD video efficiently and at high quality,' says Svein Bråten, Senior System Architect DVB, Telenor Satellite Broadcasting. 'Over the last 12 months we have carried out extensive lab tests with T-VIPS which demonstrate that the JPEG2000 compression scheme provides lower latency, better final picture quality for the consumer, without the artefacts that may appear when cascading MPEG compressions in the contribution and distribution chain. The T-VIPS contribution solutions enabled us to provide high quality HD Euro 2008 feeds. This was particularly important to our clients, as good quality HD coverage of major sporting events is increasingly used by broadcasters' marketing teams to persuade consumers to either switch platforms or to upgrade to HD.'

'Telenor Satellite Broadcasting tells us that our TVG415/430 JPEG2000 video gateways have enabled Scandinavian broadcasters to provide consumers with the best possible picture quality throughout the tournament,' says Johnny Dolvik, CEO, T-VIPS. 'The technical advantages of JPEG2000 combined with the simple plug and play operation of the our TVG415/430s meant that Telenor's preparation for the tournament ensured that the Euro 2008 video feeds provided to its clients were of the highest possible standard.'

TVG430 HD-SDI to IP Video Gateway
T-VIPS has scored a number of industry firsts with its TVG430 video gateway, including being the industry's first JPEG2000-based product to launch, to be commercially available and to be deployed. The TVG430 video gateway makes it possible to send HD SDI video over a 50 - 270 MBIT/s connection with no errors, low delay, and i-frame encoding. Unlike DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) based compression methods such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and VC1, which encode using i-frames and motion vectors to build the frames in-between i-frames, JPEG2000 is wavelet-based and hence encodes each frame independently. This means that errors introduced through packet loss are not carried over to subsequent frames - a huge advantage in terms of error resiliency.

Frame independent encoding also gives the JPEG2000 format many advantages in the edit domain. In addition, JPEG2000 wavelet compression does not suffer from the visual blocking impairment of DCT-based standards and supports high-quality 10-bit video. The TVG430 gateway can be configured as either an encoder or decoder. Key features of the TVG430 include; high quality JPEG2000 compression, robust transmission of HDTV signals without blocking artifacts and very low delay. The TVG415 is an SD version of the gateway supporting lossless compression, which can be simply upgraded to HD operation.
