Optimum Lightpath chooses T-VIPS advanced video gateways to power professional video over ethernet managed service

Optimum Lightpath, a Cablevision company, cites the advanced feature set, future proofing, flexibility and remote management and control of the T-VIPS solutions as key differentiators from other products available

T-VIPS, a global leader in professional video contribution and distribution, and Optimum Lightpath, an industry leader in providing advanced Ethernet-based communications services over its Intelligent Enterprise Network, announce today that Optimum Lightpath has chosen a range of T-VIPS video gateways that provide connectivity as well as encoding and decoding of digital video to power the Optimum Lightpath Managed Video service.

The Lightpath Managed Video service has been designed to directly address the needs of the media sector, including production facilities, broadcasters, television stations, and content distributors, as well as non-media organizations, such as healthcare facilities, municipalities and enterprises with high-resolution 'broadcast quality' video requirements. The new offering is ideally suited for professional video transport, utilizing the advantages of carrier class Ethernet's and the T-VIPS Video Gateway product ranges' resiliency to packet loss and jitter. Additionally, the service does not require any high cost legacy protocol conversions and has an attractive flat rate pricing model.

The use of JPEG2000 for video contribution and distribution is very quickly gaining traction, with the codec providing technical advantages including very low latency, 10 bits video resolution, high error resiliency and greater bandwidth performance. T-VIPS' implementation of JPEG2000 offers compelling commercial advantages too, delivering greater flexibility than MPEG and by removing the need for expensive MPEG-2 or AVC contribution HD encoders in the field. Additionally, the JPEG2000 compression scheme provides better final picture quality for the consumer, without the artefacts that may appear when cascading MPEG compressions in the contribution and distribution chain.

T-VIPS Video Gateways - A line of compact and powerful, yet cost-effective products designed for real-time contribution and distribution of professional video over IP networks. A video gateway is situated at either end of an Ethernet link and includes decode/encode functionality; each gateway can handle transmission and reception, increasing video transport flexibility. The T-VIPS range of video gateways enables operators and network owners to take advantage of the inherent flexibility of Ethernet and IP to obtain efficient, powerful, flexible and cost-effective video transport over Ethernet.

In addition to IP networks being much more cost-effective than legacy distribution, IP also enables broadcasters and operators to make significant set-up and running cost savings. Many video distribution tasks require hardware to be situated at remote locations, such as outside broadcast and transmitter sites. Not only are IP-based solutions easier to set-up, manage and control, but additionally the two-way nature of IP networks, combined with the ability to ensure that IP solutions can be controlled remotely, means that many sites, such as transmitter towers, can be un-manned for the first time.

It is now clear that IP will increasingly dominate the broadcast industry. By choosing T-VIPS' IP-based solutions a broadcaster is also increasing the likely life of its infrastructure and making it easier to enable new functionality through integrating solutions not yet on the market, to provide functionality not yet anticipated.
