Second deal for MTI's UMIP Premier Fund

18 September 2008

Arvia Technology Ltd

MTI Partners is delighted to announce the second investment by the UMIP Premier Fund (UPF). This latest investment is in a company called Arvia Technology Ltd (“Arvia”), a company operating within the rapidly developing environmental technology sector. Partnering with Alliance Fund Managers (AFM), which has invested through the Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF) Liverpool Seed Fund, and private individuals, GBP 800,000 has been invested in Arvia to bring to market its groundbreaking water purification products.

Arvia is a spin-out company from the University of Manchester’s School of Chemical Engineering and the company is a product of UMIP’s well regarded technology transfer and incubation process. Arvia Technology Ltd has developed a continuous, low cost and low maintenance process for the removal of pollutants from water for both the industrial and the municipal sectors.

Nigel Brown, the founder and Technical Director of Arvia stated:

“This investment comes at just the right time for Arvia, as it is now able to put working units in the field, prove the economic and performance benefits and continue to develop the high calibre management team alongside our new investor partners.”

Managing Partner of MTI Partners, David Ward said:

“Arvia’s capability in materials development underpins this technology offering to the global water market that is gaining importance and becoming more innovative. This investment is a perfect fit for MTI’s Materials Science/Cleantech practice.”

Arvia will locate to Merseyside in the near future and it will form part of the growing cluster of high-tech companies in the region.

The University of Manchester will provide the first rights to the Fund for investment in spinouts, giving the Fund first chance on offering ‘late seed’ capital in the order of £500k - £2m per spin-out, to academics with promising technology.

10% of the Fund will be allocated to making proof-of-principle awards (~£50k+), representing the seed corn for future deals for the Fund. In addition, the Fund will have the option to invest up to 20% in deals that do not originate from the University of Manchester. (

The University of Manchester Intellectual Property Limited (UMIP) is the managing agent of The University of Manchester for intellectual property commercialisation. UMIP's role is to enhance the reputation of the University's intellectual property development through successful spin-out and licensing business activities.

UMIP will manage early stage proof-of-principle awards, which are a novel feature of the Fund, thereby kick-starting the new ideas coming out of the University. The University currently has up to ten spinout companies looking for funding. (

Alliance Fund Managers is the fund manager for Merseyside Special Investment Fund, the largest regional fund in the UK. AFM provide loans and equity packages from £3,000-£4million to businesses based in, or prepared to relocate to, Merseyside. The University has an exceptional record of generating and sharing new ideas and innovations. Many advances of the 20th century began at the University, such as the work by Rutherford leading the splitting of the atom, and the development of the world’s first modem computer. The University has an annual income of £637m and was named University of the Year in The Sunday Times in 2006. Manchester aims to become one of the top 25 research universities in the world by 2015.
