New GCP venture partner Jürgen Wahl

Vienna - October 30, 2008
Gamma Capital Partners (GCP), the highly successful Austria-based VC firm, increases business activity in the Cleantech sector, welcoming industry expert and entrepreneur Jürgen Wahl on board.

Jürgen Wahl has more than 15 years’ experience in the renewable energy, sustainability and clean technologies sector, as a manager, political advisor and successful entrepreneur. He holds an MSc. from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna, and an MBA from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, USA.

Jürgen began working in social enterprise, where he amassed experience in strategy formulation and forecasting, essential skills that Venture Partners bring to aid GCP’s smooth operation in its focus sectors. His early tasks included a forestry development project in Bhutan, Asia, and then work for an international fast-food chain to co-develop a waste collection and recycling system.

Cleantech is a tightly regulated industry, and Jürgen’s insider knowledge, gleaned from years in political and policy advocacy, equips him with an astute grasp of government and industry relations in the sector. In its consideration of investment potential, GCP could find no better Partner for the successful interpretation of these complex objectives.

In 1996, Jürgen joined the Department for Environmental Politics at the Federation of Austrian Industry, to work on waste management and energy efficiency issues. Monitoring industry trends and developments is a key component of GCP investment strategy, and is an area in which Jürgen has had great experience from his time as a member of the Austrian Environment Ministry cabinet. He was a permanent advisor on sustainability issues, energy politics and environmental economics, and stayed in the position for more than five years.

In 2002 Jürgen moved to Verbundplan GmbH, one of Austria’s largest engineering and consulting firms, taking up the post of Head of International Project Development and Financing. Between 2001 and 2006 he also served as a board member at Austrian Power Clearing and Settlement (APCS) AG. These high-level management positions bring the executive know-how that is so essential to any successful private equity venture, and also a huge range of contacts, which GCP values in its constant search for talent and potential to add to its already impressive pool.

Jürgen has also been active in the development of OeMAG, the Austrian clearing agency for renewable power, where he held a board seat. This post and subsequent assignments reveal a strong demand for Jürgen’s incisive consulting ability, which GCP can now employ in the advice and guidance of its portfolio responsibilities. Since 2006, Jürgen has been a member of the Executive Board of EXAA, the Austrian Energy Exchange, to restructure and reposition the business.

‘We are extending our reach in the Cleantech sector, and Jürgen is with us already. We’ve got expertise across the board in terms of advice and guidance from senior industry players in all sectors, which is great news for GCP- but we are always on the look out for more Partners.’ Oliver Grabherr got to know Jürgen recently, and the two realized a successful partnership in the making from the start.

‘I am looking forward to a fruitful cooperation with GCP’, Jürgen explained. ‘I know the team as a friendly and competent one, and admire their fast and professional business approach.’

Jürgen Wahl is now CEO of Wahl & Partner GmbH, a start-up consultancy, where his entrepreneurial insight is bolstered by his huge weight of experience.
