Prominent Entrepreneurs share Business World - launch of TiE Young Entrepreneurs Programme

TiE UK (The Indus Entrepreneurs) has launched the TiE Young Entrepreneurs (TyE) Programme, a global initiative that aims to teach and inspire young students to become entrepreneurs. The TyE Programme aims to equip sixth form students with the skills required to become entrepreneurs via a curriculum taught by prominent entrepreneurs. The Programme culminates with a business plan competition in April 2010 when the students will work in teams to prepare and pitch business plans to a panel of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. The winning UK team will participate in the TyE Global Competition for a prize of a trip to Silicon Valley to meet with world-renowned entrepreneurs and role models who will share their experience and provide guidance in implementing their business ideas.

TiE is the world’s leading not-for-profit network for entrepreneurs, which promotes entrepreneurship through mentoring, networking and education. TiE has 53 chapters in 12 countries with over 11,000 members. Led by Tom Singh, Founder of New Look, TiE UK is the second largest chapter with branches in London and Manchester.

The TyE Programme is reaching out to students from very different backgrounds, as part of the Programme’s objective is to encourage students to learn from each other and raise the bar of their ambitions while gaining the skills to build successful businesses.

22 sixth form students were successful in their applications to join the TyE Programme and have started to participate in the first classes. Vivek Roy-Chowdhury, a participating student from Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys School, commented: “I feel that the Programme has already really helped me understand what it means to be an entrepreneur, especially the fundamentals of starting a new business from scratch. I have also really enjoyed the exercises set in each class.”

60 students, teachers, parents and entrepreneurs participated in the successful launch of the TyE Programme at Cass Business School where Asif Rangoonwala, Founder of Eurobuns and Board Member of TiE UK, spoke to the students about what it takes to build and run a business. Asif emphasized to the audience that: “Students need to learn how big businesses are started and we need to inspire them to achieve business success because it is possible and, more importantly, our economy needs thriving businesses!”

Topics in the TyE Programme include: ‘Opportunity Recognition’, taught by John Mullins, Associate Professor of Management Practice at London Business School; ‘Marketing’, taught by Dr Diwan Rahul Nanda, Global Chairman of TopsGrup; and ‘Finance’, taught by George Coelho, leading VC and Founder of renewable energies investor, Good Energies LLP.

George Coelho, who is also a TiE UK Charter member and Member of the Board, said: “I am looking forward to teaching one of the classes and participating in the judging of the business plan competition. I firmly support the development of the TyE Programme as it enables students from challenged areas of London to benefit from contact with successful entrepreneurs. We will encourage them to develop high expectations for the future and hopefully spur them on their way to achievement. I also hope that a UK team will win the Global Competition, since a potential trip to Silicon Valley could really have an impact on them. My years in Silicon Valley certainly inspired and developed me.”
Professor Mullins commented: “I usually teach MBA students or executives and it is fun to have such a diverse young audience. TiE is doing a great job in fostering entrepreneurship and I am pleased to be associated with this programme.”

The classes are designed to teach students about all aspects of operating a business while also giving them the opportunity to work with successful and established entrepreneurs. The sessions are both instructional and interactive and are designed to build self-confidence and entrepreneurial skills. Janki Patel, a participating student from Bromley High School, has said of the first classes: “I have enjoyed the different lectures because I have learnt something new from each of them. I have also gained confidence as a result of giving presentations to the rest of the class.”

The panellists for the business plan competition include Tom Singh, Chairman and Founder of New Look, and Chairman of TiE UK; and Nish Kotecha, Founder of Sphere Partners and President of TiE UK who will provide feedback and choose a winning UK team to announced in April 2010 and participate in the TYE Global competition.

One of the goals of the programme is to teach the students that even in tough economic times, entrepreneurial effort can be at the forefront of regenerating the economy. Christine Spooner, Executive Director of TiE UK, said: “Through this programme, students have the chance to learn that the worldwide financial problems we are witnessing are actually opportunities for entrepreneurs. We are giving them the skills necessary to take the next steps to entrepreneurship when the time is right for them.”

The results are already tangible. Thanks to interaction with successful entrepreneurs and her fellow students, Aisling O’Brien, a student from Sacred Heart of Mary Girls School and Career Academies, commented: “I have gained so much from these classes. I enjoy listening to the views of different business people on entrepreneurial subjects as it makes a good change from what is in the textbook.”

The TyE Programme builds on the highly successful “Shadow an Entrepreneur” Programme launched last year. Shadow an Entrepreneur saw 15 high profile entrepreneurs being shadowed by school students who participated in all aspects of their businesses from client meetings to operational management. It was so successful that the decision was taken to roll it out as an extended programme.

TiE partnered with Career Academies UK, the national charity that links the world of education and business, and enterprise campaign, Make Your Mark, who referred students for TyE. The programme is supported by TiE UK sponsors, ABN Amro, KPMG and HSBC, and our global sponsors the Kauffman Foundation, Nishith Desai, Standard Chartered Private Bank Boyden and Microsoft, which is hosting the classes in its headquarters at Victoria.

Tushar Dasghose, TiE UK Charter Member and Business Consultant to Microsoft, said: “It gives me great satisfaction to host such a beneficial programme in Microsoft’s offices. The students’ enthusiasm and responses to the entrepreneurs gives me a sense of satisfaction and hope for the next generation of our young entrepreneurs. I think this is a truly unique programme which deserves the highest recognition.”
