AnDiaTec GmbH & Co. KG achieves worldwide success with real time PCR Kits
Real cowboys have heard of Kornwestheim

(Stuttgart) – AnDiaTec GmbH & Co. KG from Kornwestheim is in high demand worldwide as a partner specialising in detection methods for bacteria and viruses. The company is a world market leader in real time PCR Kits for the detection of noroviruses. The U.S. Ministry of Agriculture even draws on the expertise of AnDiaTec in relation to virus infections in cattle. After an intensive period of research and development, the company is now expanding its sales network even further. The first contracts have already been signed with pharmaceutical groups.

Enormous herds – sometimes numbering more than 300,000 cattle – roam the green mountain ridges around Kansas. To ensure that they remain largely undisturbed and gain weight quickly, they are handled by experienced cowboys. One man who plays a key support role is development geneticist Dr. Johannes Kehle from Kornwestheim. He runs a diagnostic laboratory in Kansas to help the cattle breeders detect illnesses in their animals at an early stage in cooperation with the Irish company Enfer Diagnostics. News of his expertise has spread across the U.S. – even the Ministry of Agriculture draws on it. The laboratory in Kornwestheim is one of the few European manufacturers to be granted approval by the U.S. Ministry of Agriculture to import products.
The success story of the small laboratory from the STERN BioRegion started in 2003 when Dr. Kehle, having previously worked, among other places, in Tübingen for Nobel Prize winner Prof. Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, launched his own business. He specialised in the development and manufacture of detection methods for viruses and bacteria. The BSE crisis soon generated sufficient revenue to press forward with further cost-intensive developments. In 2005, Kehle decided to focus on real time PCR. This is a method for reproducing DNA in-vitro and diagnosing hereditary diseases and virus infections quickly and reliably. He was presented with the internationally renowned Animal Pharm Award in London in 2007 for the development of a new diagnostic system. He had succeeded in developing a quick and easy method of producing cell samples for real time PCR from a piece of skin taken from the ears of new-born calves during identification with an ear tag. In cooperation with its sales partners, AnDiaTec now sells its products and methods – primarily real time PCR Kits for veterinary and human medicine – in 42 countries.
The company made a name for itself among experts in Europe by offering the first reliable commercial test for noroviruses. Today, AnDiaTec is a world market leader in this field and Kehle works– free of charge – as a consultant for the World Health Organisation (WHO). “When an epidemic or pandemic is caused by a virus, we provide our expertise and the reagents required to identify the type of virus and to determine how far it has spread.”
In other words, the employees in Kornwestheim provide their services across the globe. Nevertheless, the company still manages to keep the proportion of total turnover spent on research and development at 30 percent. “We are definitely short-staffed at the moment and are urgently looking to take on new employees,” explains Kehle. He recently signed a contract with Alapis, Greece's largest pharmaceutical group, with the aim of driving forward the sale of real time PCR Kits for human medicine in the Balkan states. Further contracts have also been concluded with sales partners in the Middle East. AnDiaTec is now planning to set up its own sales operation in Germany.
From 2011 onwards, the veterinary medicine products will gain in importance because this date marks the start of a mandated EU programme for completely eradicating virus diarrhoea among cattle in Germany. This is an illness that causes massive losses in both the dairy and meat industries. “We expect to conduct around seven million tests a year,” says Kehle, who has already experienced success with similar programmes in Austria and Switzerland.
AnDiaTec also offers very promising innovative products for human diagnostics. Its portfolio includes a lactose intolerance test to reliably determine whether a patient suffers from the intolerance without the need for any further tests. This product offers considerable potential because up to 20 percent of people in Germany alone suffer from lactose intolerance. However, most are unaware of what is causing their discomfort.
