BioRob: Seed financing for lightweight robot

Darmstadt/Bonn/Rosenheim - 09.01.2013

BioRob GmbH, Darmstadt based manufacturer of the lightweight robot BioRob, announced the seed financing led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and Dr. Schulze Consulting und Holding GmbH with the goal to enhance R&D and sales force.

BioRob GmbH, Darmstadt based spin-off from Technical University Darmstadt, develops und markets the lightweight robot BioRob. The robot is designed to match the rising demand of cost-effective and easy to use automation solution. Especially small and medium enterprises are looking for new ways of automation since traditional industrial robots do not match their needs.

In contrast to the rigid and heavy design of industrial robots, this new robot arm is based on bionic inspired, antagonistic elastic actuation that enables an extremely lightweight construction. Due to this design it has a remarkable payload to weight ratio.

The low deadweight, the compliant drivetrain and the low energy consumption lead to an inherent, passive safety system allowing the user to run the robot without any additional safety equipment such as light barriers or fences even with high speed of motion. As an additional benefit, the robot’s motion can be taught by hand very easily and fast programming of the robot by manually defined trajectories is enabled. The setup and programming of the BioRob only takes a few minutes.

The BioRob therefore represents an extremely flexible automation solution, applicable even in production lines with frequently changing process conditions. The range of applications includes pick&place, inspection and co-worker operations.

Jan Röhlinger, CEO of BioRob GmbH, notes: “The patented BioRob-technology is clearly a unique selling point giving us a competitive advantage in the area of flexible automation solutions. After this seed round we are able to get to the next level in terms of market entry and R&D. With High-Tech Gründerfonds and Dr. Schulze we have two new partners helping us to further develop BioRob GmbH.”

About BioRob GmbH
BioRob GmbH is a young, innovative manufacturer who has specialized on developing and producing the lightweight robot BioRob. In 2010 the company, a spin-off from Technical University Darmstadt, was founded by Prof. Oskar von Stryk, Prof. Bernhard Möhl und Jan Röhlinger.

The lightweight robot BioRob is used for industrial automation, especially for pick&place, inspection and co-worker applications. It is based on a patented antagonistic elastic actuation inspired by the elastic muscle-tendon apparatus of the human arm. That enables an extremely lightweight and compliant construction. The BioRob-technology enables a secure collaboration of robots and humans in the same workspace even with high speed movements.
