Alta Berkeley announces successful exit from Native / opening of Israeli office in Jerusalem

London, Jerusalem, March 14, 2005 -- Alta Berkeley, the London-based venture capital firm focusing on technology companies across Europe and Israel, is pleased to announce today that it has sold its holding in Native, the provider of carrier-class optical Ethernet transport solutions, to Alcatel. Under the agreement, Alcatel will pay approximately US$55 million for the total capital of Native Networks.

The successful exit, three years after Alta Berkeley’s original investment, returns value to its investors. Concurrent with this exit, Alta Berkeley today also announces the opening of a new office in Jerusalem, Israel, which will be led by Alta Berkeley Partner, Pini Lozowick.

Exit from Native
Alta Berkeley invested in Native in 2002 and was involved in operationally supporting the business. As a result of Alta Berkeley’s involvement in the company, there was a refocus in the business strategy and the management team was further strengthened. Following the successful implementation of these changes, Alta Berkeley has taken this opportunity to capitalise on its investment as it continues to develop its investment base in Israel.

Native is the second exit in the past 12 months for Alta Berkeley, and follows from recent investments from the company including Teradici, Touch Clarity, Camero and Polatis.

Opening of Israeli office
Alta Berkeley’s new office will be located in Jerusalem and will be managed by Pini Lozowick, who has over 20 years’ experience in key executive marketing and engineering positions in both the US and Israel. He was on the founding team of Chiaro Networks in Israel, helped establish the marketing infrastructure as Director of Marketing at Broadcom Corporation in the US, was on the engineering team that kicked off operations of Digital Equipment Corporation in Israel and was the Chairman of Provigent Inc. in Israel.

The office opening endorses the company’s strategy of investing in technology companies in Europe and Israel, and will capitalize on Alta Berkeley’s existing experience in the region with its current investments in:

• Xtellus, a tunable optical networking components company
• Dune Networks, developing ASICs for Internet and Communication backbones
• Mempile, a terabyte storage technology company
• Camero, developing a through-wall imaging system
• Siliquent, developing High Performance Ethernet Processor Semiconductors

Commenting on today’s announcements, Pini Lozowick, partner at Alta Berkeley said: “The successful exit from Native is a further example of Alta Berkeley’s operational involvement in its portfolio companies. The opening of a Jerusalem office will enable us to pursue further opportunities in Israel and to attract long-term international investment to Israel through our global contacts and worldwide presence. Venture Capital is a growing sector in Israel’s economy and we are pleased to have an on the ground presence in this important marketplace.”
