RoamPoint acquires Excilan to further expand largest global WiFi roaming hub

20/04/2005: RoamPoint today announces the acquisition of Excilan’s WiFi roaming platform and service agreements with WiFi network operators and service providers in Europe, Asia and North America. The deal sees RoamPoint leading the consolidation of global WiFi roaming services, offering operators and service providers a large scale platform for WiFi roaming, and providing WiFi network operators access to hundreds of operators and service providers worldwide.

RoamPoint is a leading WiFi network operator interconnect platform and operator of managed authentication and WiFi roaming services. RoamPoint is an independent division of The Cloud, Europe’s largest operator of public WiFi networks that has substantial coverage in the UK, the Nordic Region and Germany.

Luxemburg based Excilan has operated WiFi roaming services through over 6,000 hotspot locations from over forty WiFi network operators across the world, and has provided WiFi roaming services for seventeen operators – including Orange in Switzerland, Sunday in Hong Kong, Cellcom and Pelephone in Israel, SFR in France, FatPort in Canada, One in Austria – with a pay-by-mobile-phone service. RoamPoint will continue the operation of the unique mobile phone based roaming services Excilan’s platform has provided.

George Polk, CEO The Cloud, comments, 'Our objective is to make WiFi roaming as simple and seamless for both the operator and the customer as GSM roaming. As WiFi services get more sophisticated and move onto more and more consumer devices, it will be crucial to be able to turn on your device and simply have it connect to the network. Roampoint’s mission in life is to do all the very hard and complex work, and operate the platform, to allow users lives to be simple. The acquisition of the Excilan platform, known for its ease of use, is another step in that direction.'

Through a multi-service provider system designed to make the technical communication between WiFi networks seamless, RoamPoint manages the interconnection of WiFi network operators and service providers to significantly limit the cost and complexity of exchanging services between networks and service providers. Through one interconnect to RoamPoint, WiFi network operators and service providers can access hundreds of relationships, and through them thousands of hotspots and millions of WiFi users.

In addition to the Excilan deal, RoamPoint has today announced a major cooperation with leading global GSM clearing house MACH on WiFi roaming which sees the two businesses providing an integrated service to hundreds of GSM operators and service providers around the world.

Commenting on the deal, RoamPoint managing director Damien Brady said: 'Users need easy-to-use, consistent experiences with WiFi as they roam globally. The addition of Excilan’s WiFi network operator relationships extends RoamPoint’s coverage in key markets and substantiates further our role, and that of our partner MACH, in providing a primary hub for global WiFi roaming services.'
