The Capital Fund wins Regional Venture Capital Fund of the Year Award

The Capital Fund is celebrating after being named Regional Venture Capital Fund of the Year in the prestigious Investor Allstars Awards held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, this week. The Investor Allstars Awards showcase talent within the venture capital community and the Awards Evening is a highlight of the business calendar, attracting over 500 representatives from investment firms across Europe.

The Capital Fund, a £50 million venture capital fund which backs fast-growing, small and medium-sized enterprises in Greater London, was chosen to win the Award from a shortlist that included the East Midlands Regional Venture Capital Fund and the North West Equity Fund.

The Judging Panel for Investor Allstars praised the strong track record established by The Capital Fund in just a few years and the innovative process it has developed to handle a large volume of deal flow. Since its launch in 2002, the Fund has invested in 28 high growth potential companies in the boroughs of London and the City, ranging from a leading provider of diagnostic services for HIV clinics to a rapidly growing children’s shoe store chain.

The Judges also highlighted the exits achieved by the Fund, which became the first regional venture capital fund to achieve a profitable exit when UK Explorer, an investee company that provides wired and wireless internet access solutions for hotels and airports, was acquired by Spectrum Interactive Ltd. Another portfolio company, Avanti Screen Media, raised £3m at its initial AIM quotation within seven months of the Fund’s first investment. Avanti provides satellite telecommunications and associated consultancy services to UK corporates.

The Award was presented to Geoff Sankey, The Capital Fund’s Managing Director. Mr Sankey commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious Award against strong competition from other regional venture capital funds. We aim to provide companies with the vital risk capital they need to grow, and we invest in a diverse range of businesses, often alongside other funds or private investors. As well as providing funding, we can help the investee companies with management input through non-executive directors, and introductions to relevant contacts.

We have enjoyed an excellent year in 2005, with high quality deal flow, and we look forward to helping more promising companies secure the business development finance they need during 2006.”

L-R: Geoff Sankey, Managing Director of The Capital Fund, accepts the Regional Venture Capital Fund of the Year Award at the Investor Allstars Awards 2005 Evening from Jon Mainwaring, Editor of Free Radicals technology newsletter.
