Nomura Hires Russell Pullan as Director of New Energy & Clean Technology Ventures
London, 14 September, 2006 – Nomura International plc today announced the appointment of Russell Pullan as Director of New Energy and Clean Technology Ventures. He has joined Nomura from The Carbon Trust where he was Head of Venture Capital. This new venture will have an international reach, investing in new and alternative energy companies, along with clean technologies for water and other industries. It will invest in private companies that are pre-IPO and at an advanced stage of development.
Russell commented, “The aim of this new business is to leverage Nomura’s core strengths in opening markets across Asia. The demand for energy, particularly alternative and clean energy, in China and India is soaring. We are in the best position to provide capital to American and European firms to expand into and to open doors to these new markets and forge links with Japanese multinationals.” Russell Pullan began his career in the development and management of technology and environment-related businesses in Japan in the late 1980s. Since then he has focused on environmental management and, more recently, on the financing of and investment into clean energy and environmental technology in Europe and North America. While at the Carbon Trust he was responsible for building up the venture capital business and managing a successful portfolio that included two IPOs in alternative energy. Prior to joining the Carbon Trust, he advised venture capital and private equity funds on clean energy and related environmental technology investments, as well as working in project finance. Russell is a member of the CalSTRS Clean Technology Advisory Board and has been an active member of both the North American and European Boards of the Cleantech Venture Capital Network, the British and European Venture Capital Associations, as well as a number of other industry organisations. Russell has also been a board representative for portfolio companies and is a frequent speaker at universities and conferences. Russell will be building up a team of specialists which will operate as a division of Nomura’s Merchant Banking business in Europe, led by Hiromichi Aoki. This business currently comprises three specialist private equity teams investing in life sciences, healthcare services and technology. Mr Aoki commented on the appointment “Russell has an enviable body of knowledge in clean energy, in terms of both business management and venture capital. He has a strong track record for return on investment, generating deal flow at both early and later stages. This will work well in combination with Nomura’s expertise in private equity and our access to a growing market for clean technology in Japan and the rest of Asia. We expect that increasing private equity investment will help speed the development of the sector.” The Nomura Group Nomura is a global financial services group dedicated to providing a broad range of financial services for individual, institutional, corporate and government clients.
