Shalon Ventures is launching an Israeli branch

November 14, 2006 -- Shalon Ventures, an American life sciences investment company, announced today the launching of a new Israeli branch.

Founded in 2000 by Teddy and Dari Shalon, Shalon Ventures is strategically focused on the pre-seed stages of innovative product ideas with groundbreaking potential.

Shalon Ventures has a long and successful history of partnering with physicians and scientists with innovative ideas and developing these pre-seed ideas into successful companies. Shalon's portfolio includes companies that were successfully acquired, such as: Synteni, a pioneer in the field of DNA microarrays, which was acquired by Incyte (NASDAQ: INCY) and Biopolymerix,a developer of a silver-based antimicrobial coating for medical applications, which was acquired by Biocompatibles International.

Over the past two years, Shalon co-founded and launched three new companies in cooperation with leading physicians and researchers in the US: OsteoGenix, a therapeutic products company developing novel products for the large and rapidly growing market of traumatic bone repair and bone growth, AirXpanders, which is developing a next generation tissue expansion platform for use in plastic reconstructive surgery and skin burn treatment; and iWhisper - an excess weight reduction company - developing a discreet, lightweight, and wearable device that helps users lose weight and keep it off.

According to Dari Shalon Ph.D., the Shalon Ventures co-founder who manages the Israeli branch, Shalon Ventures focuses on developing medical devices and new indications or delivery platforms for FDA-approved drugs. Shalon Ventures is nationally and internationally unique in its strategic focus to invest in the embryonic stages of life sciences concepts or problems, as opposed to investments in existing start-up companies.

Shalon's business strategy is based on close partnerships with physicians, scientists and other life sciences researchers with innovative ideas, with the objective of using Shalon's own experienced management team to develop these ideas, to advanced stages of product commercialization. Shalon's own investments enable each new venture to reach a significant milestone, for example first-in-man clinical trials.

According to Dari Shalon, the decision to operate in Israel derives from his recognition of the creativity and entrepreneurial potential among Israeli physicians and life science researchers. 'Shalon enables a multitude of cooperation opportunities, personally adapted to the entrepreneur's needs. Most physicians and researchers prefer to pursue their day to day career jobs alongside developing their idea and Shalon makes this possible for them. Israel is endowed with brilliant minds, though there is still substantial difficulty in raising financing for the very early conceptual stages of initiatives in the life sciences. Venture capital companies and incubators invest in relatively advanced technologies. Shalon is exclusively interested in the conceptual phases of proposed ideas or solutions to a medical problem and we have acquired the expertise to evaluate, develop and commercialize them. For over 20 years, the Shalon management team established close working relationships with multinational industry giants, life sciences venture capital funds, world-class researchers and medical centers, and companies capable of providing the required consulting and technology components. All of these relationships add great value for entrepreneurs as they significantly accelerate successful commercialization'.

Shalon's Israeli team includes Dr. Dari Shalon and Amir Barzilay, a serial entrepreneur and former CEO and Chairman of several start-up companies in a variety of fields in the life science industry.
