Scottish Tech Tour Attracts European Funds as Investor Confidence Grows

A delegation of top international investors has signed up for the upcoming Scottish Tech Tour which will showcase the nation’s most innovative technology companies, as a new survey by leading UK venture capital company, Scottish Equity Partners (SEP) reveals a resurgence in investor confidence and promising deal pipelines.

As the line-up of breakthrough companies on the Scottish Tech Tour is being finalised, delegates from France, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Russia and the United States of America have already signed up to take part in the tour, which is being organised by the European Tech Tour Association (ETTA), an independent, not-for-profit organisation based in Geneva.

The tour will take place against a positive investment backdrop in Scotland, as the SEP Connect Investment Trends Survey November 2006, which polled 16 leading technology investment experts, found that 80 per cent anticipate a resurgence in investment in the next 12 months, driven by rising confidence, promising deal pipelines and the availability of fresh funding. The remaining 20 per cent forecast a steady flow of funds.

The European Tech Tour Association (ETTA) has successfully hosted 23 international tours to identify the most promising emerging technology companies of the future and is putting the finishing touches to its second tour in Scotland, which takes place 6 – 8 December.

The Scottish Tech Tour is being organised by President Ian Ritchie, a leading serial technology entrepreneur and investor, Vice-President Gary Le Sueur, a director at Scottish Equity Partners (SEP), and Connect Scotland, an organisation which nurtures the creation and development of technology enterprise in Scotland.

Tour President Ian Ritchie said: “This is a very exciting time for the tour to come to Scotland, as the climate is ripe for new investment. We have assembled an impressive group of companies to showcase cutting-edge products across a broad group of specialisations and interest from investors across Europe and the US is high.”

SEP director Le Sueur added: “The SEP Connect survey identified a number of investment hotspots such as semi-conductors, wireless software, electronics and energy-related technology and these will feature in the elite group of companies we will showcase during the Scottish Tech Tour.”

Delegates at the Scottish Tech Tour will meet more than 20 selected rising star companies over the course of a two-day visit, which will also take in visits to some of the nation’s most famous historic, cultural and scientific locations in Stirling, Edinburgh and Glasgow, including the world-famous Roslin Science Centre and the equally famous Rosslyn Chapel, which features in the film “The Da Vinci Code.”

Sven Lingjaerde, President of the ETTA said: “We are very much looking forward to building on the success of the first Scottish Tech Tour in 2001. It’s been an exciting five years for technology in Scotland and the event will therefore provide an excellent array of high potential start up companies, as well as give participants the chance to gain an insight into the local technology scene, and make new, valuable contacts.”

The tour will host more than 50 selected delegates representing leading global technology companies including Siemens, Logitech and Nokia, as well as top tier European venture capital firms, including Sofinnova, Iris Capital and Scottish Equity Partners.

Ends 14 November 2006
