Dutch BViT almost the best incubator in the World
BeSBI award 2006

THE HAGUE – 12 DEC 2006 – The BViT innovation network has accomplished to end up second in the world wide benchmark ‘Best Science Based incubator 2006’. The entrepreneurial incubators of the Dutch group were already considered among the most efficient science based incubators in the world, according to a report on incubation in 2003. This recent benchmark has been made public last Thursday in Copenhagen – Danmark by CSES in cooperation with Science-Alliance.

Since 2000, the BViT innovation network has been developing their so called Cluster Incubator formula as a private venture. An entrepreneurial attitude towards this profession is one of the key ingredients for their apparent success. In their short history they where able to setup 4 Clusters for start-ups in the digital technology field. Notwithstanding other private incubators went bankrupt in the first years after the millennium, BViT could survive through her unconventional approach which can best be described with her adagium ‘innovative start-ups develop successfully through smart cooperation’. Until to date, BViT helped to create and launch 54 innovative en creative companies and more than 200 high-end jobs. With a survival rate of 86% and 35% of the companies growing towards gazelle status, the BViT has been more successful than many other initiatives in the field. Well known launches have been; 1A First Alternative, Stone IT, Speedlinq, Netive and Flying Bytes; all fast growing companies you can expect to find in Gazelle and Fast Growth rankings in the coming years.

The development of a knowledge driven economy has become a world wide challenge. Science based incubators have grown into a vital tool to stimulate the creation of knowledge intense companies. That’s why the BViT group has set-up cooperation programmes with Universities in Delft, Zoetermeer and The Hague. Other organisations have found their way to the BViT group to help them develop effective policies and programmes to support entrepreneurship through education, clustering and incubation. The BViT group helped the City of The Hague to re-develop a cigarette factory into a price winning third generation business incubator of 12.000 m2 that will help to revive an old (objective 2) industrial area. In cooperation with Inholland University and partners, the BViT developed a business school that is start-up steered, i.e. students setup and run a real companies as part of their education in entrepreneurship. This programme has been awarded by an Equal subsidy of the European Social Fund.

The BeSBI-award is every year given to the best performing incubator in the world, based on an assessment which is performed by CSES and presented during the Incubator conference of the Science-Alliance. All these years BViT ranked in the top-10 of the approximately 50 incubators that participated. This year the number one was ‘First Flight Centre’ in North-Carolina. According to the director incubators Toon Buddingh’, “We are very happy with this clear acknowledgement of the effort we put into this venture, and we’d love to share our success with others”. “And that is what we are already putting into business, through our subsidiary HuygensXC that delivers advice and training to governments, universities and incubators in the field of entrepreneurship/enterprise development” complements Pim de Bokx, director of HuygensXC and managing partner in the BViT group. ‘There is still improvement to be made, we can still become the number one in the world with preferably a network of incubators operated with our formula’ states Buddingh’ ambitiously.
