picoChip named in top three “firms to watch in mobile”

8 February 2007 -- picoChip has been chosen as one of the top three companies in the Real Business / O2 ‘50 to Watch in Mobile’ report. An elite panel of judges reviewed over 200 firms in the wireless and mobile arena, ranging from technology businesses like picoChip to service providers and retailers, to come up with a definitive list of the British companies driving the mobile revolution. picoChip is the only semiconductor company focussing on wireless infrastructure, where it is the industry standard for WiMAX and has enabled the concept of femtocell (3G home access points).

“We are delighted to be ranked so highly in a report that includes very many exceptional and growing concerns,” said Guillaume d’Eyssautier, President and CEO of picoChip. “The strength and depth of this list illustrates the potential for wireless services, now and in the years to come: we’re flattered to know that the judges believe, as we do, that picoChip can play a key role in enabling those services.”

Colin Orton-Jones, Deputy Editor of Real Business, added, “picoChip is a really inspiring company and shows how British technology can lead the world. Following the explosive growth of fabless pioneer Cambridge Silicon Radio (zero turnover to $486m in seven years), we see similar possibilities for picoChip'.

The judging panel consisted of: Mike Short, chair of the Mobile Data Association; Eden Zoller, principal analyst at Ovum; Ken Blakeslee, chair of WebMobility Ventures; Christina Domecq, founder of SpinVox; and Mark Stansfeld, sales director of O2.

picoChip is a fabless chip company: it designs silicon circuits that are manufactured by its partners. The firm’s main offering is a multi-core IC for 3G mobile communications. It also has designs for HSDPA/HSUPA (sometimes called 3.5G) femtocells, and WiMAX, where its product is the de facto industry standard, used by Airspan, Intel and many other manufactures.

About picoChip
picoChip, located in Bath, England, is dedicated to providing innovative, flexible wireless solutions to help equipment makers minimize time-to-market, costs, and system power consumption.

The heart of the company’s offering is a scaleable, multi-processor baseband IC that combines the computational density of a dedicated ASIC with the programmability of a traditional high end Digital Signal Processor. This radically reduces both development time and materials cost and enables the strategic goal of the “Software Defined Radio”. The company has the most comprehensive reference designs in the industry, with complete, standard-compliant solutions for both UMTS (including HSDPA) and WiMAX (802.16d upgradeable to 802.16e).
