The Capital Fund invests in innovative Family Activity Centres

The Capital Fund, a £50 million venture capital fund that invests in fast growth companies in Greater London, has announced a capital injection of £250,000 in Kids Planet, which will allow the family activity centres operator to develop new sites under its new Jack & Lulu’s branding.

Kids Planet venues enable working parents with young families to spend quality time with their children. Set up in 2003, Kids Planet already has two established venues to the north of London – in Radlett and Finchley – and now the first Jack and Lulu’s in Hampstead. All of the company’s sites provide play and party facilities for young children, where their parents and other adults can relax in pleasant surroundings, enjoying high-quality food or refreshments, while their children are entertained in a safe and fun environment. And it is this provision for parents that sets Kids Planet apart from its competitors.

Neal Fullman, Kids Planet Managing Director, said: “Among other development plans, The Capital Fund’s investment has allowed us to finish and open Jack and Lulu’s, on the site of the old Jack Straw’s Castle pub. While maintaining all the play facilities of the Kids Planet venues, we have also developed a high-quality restaurant, providing healthy, freshly-cooked organic food for all the family.”

Definitely not the standard burgers and chips fast food fare served up at many children’s play centres, this emphasis on quality produce is another major attraction for parents anxious about what their children eat.

Eating and playing are only two of the four core activities at each Kids Planet venue, with “party” and “explore” making up what’s on offer. As all children love a party, Kids Planet can provide a wide variety of tailored two-hour themed parties where parents just bring along the kids and let the venue do the rest of the entertaining. And taking advantage of quieter times in the week, when there is less call on the play facilities, there is a range of “explore” activities for children and adults, including arts and crafts, yoga and cookery. In the evenings there are even child nutrition courses for parents.

Kids Planet has identified over 20 key locations in the UK where there is a market for such premium family activity centres.

Mr Fullman also stated that: “We’re hoping to expand to a further two sites in the coming 12 months – and thereafter our plans are for a substantial development of between five and 10 centres a year. So, the investment from The Capital Fund has come at very exciting time for us, and Stuart Nicol and the team were very supportive and creative throughout the financing process.”

Stuart Nicol, Investment Manager at The Capital Fund, said: “There is clearly a significant market opportunity for Kids Planet and the Jack & Lulu’s format, and we’re very happy to be able to help take the business forward. I look forward to continuing to work with Neal and his colleagues as the company continues its rapid progress.”
