Weimar becomes Germany’s largest public hotspot

Inhabitants and visitors will find a free and secure mobile Internet access in most areas of interest. After a hassle free registration, people may use configuration services to automatically configure encrypted connections on laptops and wireless handheld devices using an access software or receiving a configuration SMS (auto provisioning). Therefore users simply have to enter there user name and password. Untroubled and safe surfing on the Internet is no longer a mystery.
The official start of the project was marked by the Lord Mayor of Weimar, Stefan Wolf, yesterday. Apart from the technical partnership local media-partners are also involved, especially in providing multimedia content for the mobile net.

The public and the industry play an active role. This refers to the net infrastructure as well as to the contents on the geodata-based media portal. The infrastructure is built according to the well-known community principle. The software ZONOS provided by the Cuculus GmbH allows to safely provide an encapsulated hotspot within a public Wi-Fi access point, while protecting the privacy of all parties involved. “The guarantee of privacy for the one who provides the hotspot is new in the market. The Software comes directly with the Access Point. There is definitely no need for technical knowledge if someone wants to actively contribute to this network. It is just one click”, stated René Böringer, Managing Director of the Cuculus GmbH. It differs from the common approaches in that the authentication of the mobile user and the management of the encapsulated hotspot are done by an internet service provider. Users can operate and set up their own private network with the same device. Media partners provide and link information, audio and video sequences dealing with different fields of interest in the city to locations. In the future the experience gained by the consortium in Weimar will help providers to built up an almost area-wide Wi-Fi network and run it profitably.
