Bioniqs groundbreaking ‘green’ solvent prices

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Press Release 10th January 2008

Bioniqs (York , UK), the solvent design company, has implemented new market leading prices for their catalogue range of ‘green’ solvents. These products, known as ionic liquids, offer environmental and performance benefits over many widely used solvents as they can be both biodegradable and recyclable. Due to the development of new manufacturing processes they are now available from as little as £49/kg.

It is thought these highly competitive prices will heighten market interest in ionic liquids from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and related trades. This should assist in facilitating the transition of this relatively new technology into large-scale, generic industrial processes. Additionally, with environmental and chemical legislation such as REACH (in Europe ) limiting the use of many widely used solvents, the offering of legislation compliant products is of increasing importance.

Bioniqs manufacture up to a 10kg scale in-house and licence preferred partners to produce bulk-scale quantities. It is anticipated that when supplied at scale even lower prices will be realised. The company’s product catalogue acts as a supplement to their core service of recommending and designing application specific green solvents from a proprietary database of over 12 million candidate solvents.

Notes to Editors:

· Bioniqs Ltd was established in 2004 by CNAP (Centre for Novel Agricultural Products) at the University of York with support from its commercialization partners Amaethon and IP2IPO.

· The company was formed to exploit the potential of a novel class of patented ammonium based ionic liquids. They achieve this by undertaking solvent recommendation and design studies which screen the marketplace of green solvents (including ionic liquids) to identify the most suitable product for an application.

· These studies are made possible by an extensive and proprietary computer database which is used to screen, evaluate and design solvents which are both specific to the customer’s requirements and optimized for their particular application.

· Ionic liquids are a sustainable new technology with the potential to replace conventional solvents in a wide range of applications. They are composed of pure salts that are liquid below 100°C. Their low lattice energy affords a structure with considerable intermolecular space which contributes to the dissolution of otherwise intractable molecules.

· Ionic liquids provide realistic alternatives to molecular organic solvents for numerous industrial applications, including natural product extraction, biomass processing, industrial cleaning and polymer separation where their high solvation capacities, superior properties and environmentally benign characteristics are desirable.
